Position Vacant: Microbiology laboratory technician
The Shoklo Malaria Research Unit (SMRU:
www.shoklo-unit.com; www.tropmedres.ac) currently has a laboratory position available for a suitably qualified and enthusiastic person.
The SMRU microbiology laboratory supports the clinical work of the unit: culturing general microbiology specimens such as blood, cerebrospinal fluid, pus, sputum and urine from patients with suspected infections. The laboratory consists of bacteriology, TB and virology sections.
The major responsibilities for the current position are general microbiology laboratory work including media preparation, culture of clinical and research specimens, identification of organisms, antimicrobial sensitivity testing (using disk testing and the E-test method) and quality control work. There may also be diagnostic PCR work depending on the experience of the post holder and the successful applicant will contribute to the research activities of the laboratory.
Training will be provided but a sound knowledge in the biological sciences and previous experience in a clinical microbiology laboratory is desirable.
The Shoklo Malaria Research Unit is part of the Oxford University-Mahidol University-Tropical Medicine Research Program and is based in Mae Sot, Tak Province and has been conducting medical research in this region for over 20 years.
Requirements: Bachelor Degree in Medical Technology, Microbiology or equivalent, good command of English both written and spoken, willingness to be based in Mae Sot, good disposition and integrity and the ability to communicate well and work with a multinational team.
Salary is 15,000 to 18,000 Baht/month + benefits.
